The Head of Engineering is focused on engineering and technology at a tactical level, working closely with our CTO who is focused on the organisation at the strategic level.
You'll be leading the team day to day to ensure features are delivered at high quality, that our apps and platform are delivered in way that allows us to grow quickly, and that engineers are able to deliver their best work.
A typical day would involve:
- Working with product to design features
- Pair programming with staff
- Providing feedback on changes to our platform
- Ensuring engineers are unblocked and able to focus on the features they are assigned to
- Making technology choices to deliver the best engineering and product results
There is a very strong focus on managing the engineering side of the team, while our CTO focuses on more strongly on the hiring, benefits, engagement, performance and happiness of the engineering team.
This role would be perfect for someone who has been an engineering manager (or above) and really enjoyed the technical side of leading a large team but not didn't really fancy the people management side.
You'll be expected to understand and write code on a regular basis, as well as ensure that engineering's workload is well managed and prioritised.
We use a pretty unique system for managing workload - engineers choose the features they work on, a Kanban board shows upcoming work, we don't use story points, we don't have deadlines and we have very minimal management and reporting overheads. We love this style and are looking for someone to continue (and improve) this methodology.
Runn is built using the latest stack: Javascript, React, Node, GraphQL, Postgres & Rails tested with Cypress, Jest & Github Actions.
Our developers are involved in the entire product life cycle. We aren't just full stack, we are product stack. That means you'll be involved from the idea stage, into design, then development, testing, deployment and support. You own your features and have the ability to shape them.
We keep things simple and value your time just as much as our own. Our interview process generally includes an intro chat, a technical interview and a deep dive into engineering and team management opinions and finally a reference check.
